Kamehameha avoids HBA upset

By Paul Honda

Top-ranked Kamehameha took the best shots Hawaii Baptist could give, but escaped with a 25-23, 28-26 volleyball win last night at the Eagles’ gym.
Freshman Misty Ma’a and junior Taylor Akana led a balanced Warriors attack with six kills each. Middle Alex Akana added five kills and two aces.

Kamehameha improved to 8-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Coach Chris Blake was simply relieved to get a win.

“HBA is a very good team regardless of classification. I’m happy with the way our team fought back,” Blake said. “It’s important for us to be put in adversity situations. We had a lot of errors today, and a lot of that had to do with HBA.”

Kamehameha turns back Hawai’i Baptist in ILH

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Hawai’i Baptist Academy girls volleyball team threatened to slay its second Division I giant in eight days last night, but three-time defending state champion Kamehameha denied the Eagles, 25-23, 28-26.

The visiting Warriors, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser’s statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 8-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. HBA, ranked No. 4 despite being classified as DII, fell to 5-1.

The Eagles upset defending Division I state-runner-up ‘Iolani last week and served three times to potentially send last night’s match to a third game, but Alex Akana tied it at 26-26 on a **** off a quick middle set and followed it with an ace.

Kamehameha then completed the sweep after a Hawai’i Baptist **** attempt went wide.

ILH Cross Country: First Practice Meet – Waipio

Special to www.HawaiiDigitalSports.com

by Alan Linsky
www.coach-photos.com

There are no official results for this meet, although it looked like every
team was doing their own recordkeeping!

There were 5 races run today – intermediate girls, intermediate boys, open
girls, varsity girls and a combined JV/Varsity boys race. The crowd was loud and
big. The weather was good, partly cloudy, a bit too humid, but not bad for the
first race of the season.

Although it’s hard to learn a lot in such an early practice meet, there
were two messages sent loud and clear in the varsity races.

First, in the varsity girls division, Julie Besenbruch won in a time of
about 19:30 (if I heard correctly). Julie ran smoothly and looked very strong
after her time off last year. She’s definitely back and should certainly be
placed at the top or close to the top of the early season state rankings.

On the boys varsity side, Matt Nakamoto picked up where he left off last
year winning by a big margin so he showed he’s ready to defend his ILH
championship.

Congratulations to the 5 winners pictured below!
